Further information

Orhaniye is situated in the Mugla Province of Turkey. You fly into Dalaman International Airport and arrivals day is a Saturday.

The ship

In Turkey, we offer exciting sailing for Tradewinds Plus Members, on an entirely different type of boat out of Orhaniye...... This historical ship "Rhea" was launched at Nyborg, Denmark, on the 18th June,1900 and is a top sail schooner built of oak on oak. She combines modern comforts, such as air conditioning, with the splendours of a traditional sailing ship. She was recommissioned in 1990 and returned to her original rig in 1997. Below decks "Rhea" is attractively paneled throughout in pine with teak fittings and oak beams. There is a spacious saloon with a lounging area and beautiful teak dining table. The four guest cabins each have air conditioning plus en-suite private bathroom.

Weather

Summers are extremely hot and dry, with daytime temperatures reaching up to 35°C, and winters are warm and wet, plunging to 5°C at night. The area is quite typical of a Mediterranean climate.

What to bring

Please pack as lightly as you can. Most of our guests wear only a fraction of what they bring! All you really need are shorts, tee shirts and beachwear. In addition to this pack clothing to cover arms and legs whilst dining ashore or staying on the mainland. Soft luggage is preferable if you have it. We have some limited storage onshore for your empty bags, but please bring as little as you are comfortable with. Between meals, fresh fruit is available. If you like to eat more between meals, please feel free to bring snacks with you.

It is advisable to bring a change of clothes and toiletries in your hand luggage. If your luggage gets lost enroute it will not be able to be delivered to you until days later.

What shoes shall I bring?

You only need sandals or other shoes for the nights on shore as you will be barefoot whenever you are aboard.

Dry bags

You will be around water for the week. If you are concerned about getting your purse, wallet or watch wet, bring a small dry bag. These can be purchased from sports and outdoor vendors. Some of them roll up and trap the air inside which has the added benefit of making the bag float.

Fishing

All of our yachts have limited fishing gear onboard - we usually troll a line when sailing from island to island and will often catch yellow fin, wahoo, mahi-mahi or similar ...... which might become lunch!

Travel insurance

We strongly advise that all guests cruising with us have fully comprehensive travel insurance which will cover all eventualities such as hotel accommodation, lost baggage, theft, changes to flights or even cruise cancellation within TradeWinds 90 day period.

Please read our travel insurance recommendations for more information.

Hotels

You can book a room at the Palmiye hotel. The double rooms are basic, but clean, air-conditioned, comfortable and cost 20 Euros per person per night inclusive of breakfast. For more information please see their website at www.palmiyehotel.com.

Currency

Turkey's currency is the Turkish Lira (TL). Lira comes in coins of 1, 5, 10, 25 and 50 kuruş and a 1 lira coin, and notes of 5, 10, 20, 50 and 100 lira.

It makes sense to wait until you arrive in Turkey to change your money into lira since you will probably get a better exchange rate inside the country than outside. Turkish lira are virtually worthless outside Turkey, so make sure you spend them all before leaving.

Restaurateurs and shop owners don't often carry large-denomination notes on them, so try to keep a supply of small money on you for small payments.

Credit cards are widely accepted at hotels, restaurants and boutiques, but smaller businesses may ask for cash.

Customs

Religious customs should be respected, particularly during the month of Ramadan when eating, drinking and smoking during daylight hours should be discreet as it is forbidden by the Muslim culture. Dress modestly when visiting mosques or religious shrines. Do not take photographs of or near military and official institutions and always ask permission when taking photographs of people.

Visas and restrictions

You must have a valid passport. A visa is required for stays of up to three months and can be obtained from the point of entry. All travellers to Turkey are required to hold documents for onward or return travel, and sufficient funds for the period of their stay. Entry may be refused to those of unkempt appearance.

We cruise in and out of Greece and Turkey so please ensure that you get a multiple entry Visa, (at no extra cost), on entry at Turkey. It's called, "Muteaddit giris", in Turkish.

Your passport must be valid for at least six months from date of arrival in Turkey with the exception of nationals of Belgium, France, Germany, Greece, Liechtenstein, Italy, Luxembourg, Malta, The Netherlands, Spain and Switzerland, who can enter with a national ID card (which must have a validity of one year).

Tourists and business visitors from the following countries do require visas and can obtain a sticker-type entry visa at the point of entry for a fee (prices are dependent on nationality): Australia, Austria, Belgium, Canada, Ireland, Italy, Malta, The Netherlands, Portugal, Slovenia, Spain, the UK and USA for stays not exceeding three months.

To obtain Turkish visa you need to make the payment in Euros or American dollars. This is because they do not accept credit cards, Turkish Lira or traveler's cheques. The visa fees have to be paid in cash and cash only and it costs Euro10 for Irish and 10 pounds for UK passport holders. The visas issued at the port of entry are sticker type visas, which allow a maximum stay of 90 days in Turkey. If more than one person is traveling on one passport (as in family passport), visa fees is to be paid for each person individually.

Member all-inclusive fees

For payment of your all-inclusive fee travellers cheques are accepted without fees. "Travel Money" cards, or similar, will incur the normal credit card fees that are passed to us from the bank.
